GEO glossary
The set of activities that make a company present, correctly cited and recommended in the answers of generative engines.
GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is the set of activities that make a company, a brand or a person present, correctly cited and recommended in the answers of generative engines: ChatGPT, Gemini and AI Overviews, Perplexity, Claude, Copilot. The term was coined in 2023 by a Princeton University study that measured for the first time which features of a piece of content increase its probability of being picked up in an answer.
Unlike SEO, which optimises pages to appear among the results, GEO optimises entities and sources to appear inside the answer. Work is done on the website, but above all on the third-party sources models read: Wikipedia and Wikidata, LinkedIn, press, reviews, directories, communities.
It is measured in presence, accuracy and sentiment in answers, per question and per engine, and in share of voice against competitors. The full guide is on the What is GEO page.
