GEO glossary

Source (of an AI answer)

The page, document or data item from which a model took a statement. The point where GEO acts.

A source is the page, document or structured data item from which a generative model took a statement contained in an answer. It can be a Wikipedia entry, an article, a review, a discussion, a directory listing, the company's website. It may have been read at the time of the question (browsing) or during training (memory).

GEO starts from the principle that answers are not changed directly: sources are. That is why the GEO Assessment traces, for every relevant statement, the source that generated it, verifies it with URL and date and estimates its weight. The resulting list is the source map, and the sources not looked after by the company are the plan's first priority list.
