GEO glossary
A practical synonym of GEO that stresses the direct answers of engines, with or without generative AI.
AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) refers to optimising for engines that answer a question directly instead of returning a list of links: featured snippets, voice assistants, AI Overviews, chatbots. The term predates the spread of generative models and is now used almost interchangeably with GEO.
The difference, when there is one, is one of emphasis: AEO looks at the format of the answer (short, direct, extractable), GEO at the mechanism by which a generative model chooses and assembles sources. The practices largely coincide: definitions at the top, FAQs, data with sources, self-contained blocks.
