Training memory and browsing

The two ways a model knows a company: what it read when it was built, and what it finds on the web at the time of the question.

A generative model knows a company in two ways. Training memory is what it read when it was built: frozen at a date, it weighs repetition across sources and does not change until the next training run. Browsing is the web search at the time of the question: it uses the Bing index (ChatGPT, Copilot), Google's (Gemini) or its own (Perplexity), and changes in weeks.

The distinction explains many assessment outcomes: the same question asked with and without browsing produces different answers, and a dated narrative can disappear from browsing answers while remaining in those from memory. A GEO plan works on both: recent sources for today, consistency across sources for tomorrow's models.
