GEO glossary
A plausible but false statement produced by a model, often to fill the absence of sources about an entity.
A hallucination is a plausible but false statement produced by a generative model: a wrong date, a non-existent product, a fact about another company attributed to yours. It arises when the model lacks sufficient sources about an entity and fills in with what is statistically probable.
For GEO, hallucinations are a symptom of a weak entity: few sources, namesakes, inconsistent data across website, Wikidata and directories. They are reduced with consistency across sources and with clear, dated facts repeated in several places. Browsing engines produce fewer of them than those answering from memory.
