llms.txt

A text file proposed in 2024 to offer models a Markdown map of the website. Useful at zero cost, but rarely read by crawlers.

llms.txt is a 2024 proposal: a text file at the root of the website, in Markdown, that summarises what the organisation does and lists the main pages, meant to be read by language models instead of the HTML. It has been adopted by roughly one website in ten.

The 2026 data are however clear: the crawlers of OpenAI, Google and Anthropic request it in negligible volumes, and Google has stated it does not use it. It is read mostly by developer tools. Our position: keep it, because it costs nothing and does no harm, but without expectations. What moves the answers is sources, structured data and crawler access.
