GEO glossary
When ChatGPT browses, it searches on Bing; Copilot is built on the Bing index. Being indexed on Bing is a condition for being cited.
ChatGPT, when web search is on, queries the Bing index and reads the pages Bing returns; Microsoft Copilot is built entirely on that index. The Bing and Google indexes do not coincide: websites highly visible on Google can have partial coverage on Bing because of a missing sitemap, cautious crawling rules or blocks.
For GEO the consequence is practical: a property on Bing Webmaster Tools, a submitted sitemap, IndexNow active and Bing Places for locations are prerequisites, not options. In our assessments, Bing coverage is among the first technical checks and, in one case in three, among the first items in the plan. More in the article Bing is the engine behind ChatGPT.
