Wikidata for companies: the entry AI reads first
What Wikidata is, why it feeds Google's Knowledge Graph and the models' memory, what a company's entry should contain and how to create or complete it in an afternoon.
Wikidata is the free, structured knowledge base of the Wikimedia Foundation: millions of "items" (people, companies, places, products) described with machine-readable properties. It is the source from which Google builds much of the Knowledge Graph, and it is present in the training data of all the large models. For a company, a complete Wikidata entry is the identity record AI reads first.
Why it matters more than it seems
AI engines need to know who you are before they can say anything about you. Without a stable entity they confuse namesakes, get industry and headquarters wrong, attribute other people's facts. Wikidata solves the problem at the root, with unique identifiers (VAT number, LEI code, official profiles) that link all your sources together.
Citation studies show that companies with a complete Wikidata entry (identifiers, aliases, classification) are recognised and included more often in AI Overviews and model answers. It is one of the few GEO interventions that acts on all engines at once.
Wikipedia and Wikidata are not the same thing
Wikipedia requires encyclopaedic notability and third-party sources; many companies do not meet it, and that is not a problem. Wikidata has broader criteria: an item is accepted if it describes an identifiable entity with verifiable sources, even without a Wikipedia entry. Almost any company with a registration number, a website and a public presence can have its own entry.
What a company's entry should contain
- Label and description in the local language and in English ("Italian company in [industry]").
- Aliases: legal name, brands, previous names.
- Instance of: business, limited company, etc.
- Industry, headquarters (city), country, inception date, founders and chief executive (linked to their entries, if they exist).
- Official website, profiles (LinkedIn, X, Facebook, YouTube) via the dedicated properties.
- Identifiers: VAT number, LEI code if listed, any registry and directory IDs.
- References for every statement: the website, the company register, an article.
How to proceed in an afternoon
- Search on wikidata.org whether the item already exists (it has often been created by others, incompletely).
- Create an account and, if needed, the item.
- Fill in the properties in the order above, adding a reference for each.
- Link the key people, creating their items if they have public sources (LinkedIn, interviews).
- Declare the link on your website: in the Organization structured data, the
sameAsproperty should list the Wikidata URL together with the official profiles. That is how machines close the loop.
What not to do
Do not add promotional statements ("market leader"), do not use the entry for anything that is not a fact, do not create items for minor brands without sources. Wikidata is a community with rules; well-curated entries stay, promotional ones get cleaned up.
After Wikidata
The entry needs maintaining: change of CEO, new headquarters, acquisition. An up-to-date entity is the base on which all other interventions rest, from correcting dated narratives to third-party sources. In assessments, creating or completing the Wikidata entry is in the first week of the plan in over half the cases.
